The four kinds of broken screen

People say "cracked screen" to mean four fairly different things, and knowing which one you have tells you how urgent it is.

First, cracked glass with a perfect display underneath and touch working everywhere. This is cosmetic for now. It is not an emergency, but it will not heal, and glass eventually starts lifting and cutting fingers and letting moisture in.

Second, cracked glass with dead zones. The glass took the hit and the digitizer underneath it did not survive, so part of the screen has stopped registering touch. That one is worth fixing quickly because it only gets more maddening.

Third, a display that is bleeding, showing colored lines, or has a black ink-like blot spreading across it. That is the panel itself failing and it always gets worse. Photograph anything important now, because that blot will eventually cover everything.

Fourth, a screen that is perfectly intact and completely black. That one is not necessarily a screen at all. It might be the display, the battery, or the board, and that is exactly what a free diagnostic is for.

Phones: what the repair actually involves

On every modern smartphone the glass, the touch digitizer, and the display are bonded into one assembly. That means there is no such thing as replacing only the glass on a current iPhone or Galaxy flagship, whatever anybody tells you. The repair is an assembly swap: the old one comes out, the new one goes in, and everything gets transferred and tested.

Most phone screens are about an hour at our bench. Some take longer, particularly larger Pro, Max, and Ultra models, and foldables are their own category entirely. Your data is untouched the entire time. We do not wipe anything and we do not need your device reset to do a screen.

The price range is wide because the panel type drives it. An older LCD iPhone screen and a current OLED flagship screen are not in the same universe of part cost. We tell you which one you are looking at before we touch anything, and if the honest answer is that the repair costs more than the phone is worth, we say that and talk about a refurbished replacement instead.

Tablets and iPads crack differently

A tablet falls from higher up, lands flatter, and has more glass to flex, which is why tablet damage so often looks like a full spiderweb rather than a single corner crack. It looks catastrophic and usually is not. iPad screens are routine work for us, as are Galaxy Tabs and most mainstream Android tablets.

Tablets do take longer than phones, because the adhesive is more extensive and doing it properly means heating and separating carefully rather than rushing it. Expect same day to next day on most models rather than an hour. On some iPad models the digitizer and the display are separate parts, which occasionally means a cheaper repair than people expect, and we will tell you if yours is one of those.

One caution: a tablet with cracked glass that is being used by a kid should get fixed sooner rather than later, because tablet glass sheds. Phone glass tends to stay put. Tablet glass comes off in pieces.

Laptop screens, including MacBooks

Laptop screens break in a specific way. Somebody closes the lid on a pen, or the machine gets carried by the screen, or it goes into a bag with something rigid against it. The result is usually cracked glass with a working backlight, or a display with a pressure blot, or a panel that shows an image on an external monitor but nothing on the built-in screen.

All of those are repairable. On many Windows laptops the panel is a separate part and the repair is relatively clean. On MacBooks it depends heavily on the model, because on some the display is an assembly that includes the lid, and that is a bigger part. We diagnose for free and give you the real number for your specific machine rather than a generic laptop screen price, and there is a dedicated MacBook page if that is what you have.

Bring the power adapter with any laptop. It saves time and once in a while it turns out the power supply was part of the problem.

What you should do before you come in

Not much, honestly. Back the device up if you can, because that is good practice regardless, but it is not required for a screen repair and we do not wipe anything. Know your passcode or be able to unlock the device, because we need to test touch across the whole screen after the repair and we cannot do that on a locked phone.

If glass is actively lifting or shedding, a piece of clear packing tape over the worst of it will get you to the store without slicing a thumb. That is a temporary measure and not a fix, but it works.

Do not press on a spreading display blot to see if it goes away. It does not, and pressure makes it worse.

Why Route 1, and what the warranty means

Every screen we install carries our Limited Lifetime Warranty. If the panel we installed fails, or our workmanship is the problem, bring it back and we deal with it. A brand new crack from a brand new drop is not covered. That is the honest limit on any repair warranty and we would rather be clear about it at the counter than argue about it later.

The repair-or-replace conversation

Sometimes the right answer is not a screen. On an older phone with a cracked display, a tired battery, and a worn port, the total of three repairs can approach what a good refurbished device costs, and at that point you are better off replacing it. We will run those numbers out loud with you rather than quietly booking the repair, because the repair is the bigger ticket and we would rather you came back next year than felt taken.
