The four repairs that save most MacBooks

After years of doing this, the list of what actually goes wrong on a MacBook is shorter than people expect, and four repairs cover the overwhelming majority.

Batteries. Every MacBook battery wears out, and a MacBook that has to stay plugged in is a much worse computer than the same machine with a fresh cell. This is the single most common MacBook job we do.

Thermal service. Fans pack with dust and thermal paste dries out over years, and the machine responds by throttling itself into slowness. Cleaning and repasting frequently restores most of the performance people assume they lost to age.

Storage. On models where the drive can be upgraded, moving to a larger or faster drive is often the biggest single speed improvement available, and we clone your existing setup over so nothing has to be rebuilt.

Keyboards. A few dead keys, a sticky key, or a key that repeats does not mean a new computer. Depending on the model it is anything from a straightforward swap to a bigger job, and we tell you which yours is before starting.

Swollen batteries and why they are urgent

If your trackpad has stopped clicking properly, or clicks unevenly, or the laptop no longer sits flat on a table, or there is a new gap along the edge of the lid, you have a swollen battery. That is not a cosmetic issue and it is not something to keep an eye on. A swelling cell keeps swelling, and given enough time it will bend the chassis, crack the trackpad, or push the display assembly out of alignment.

Stop charging it, carry it flat rather than crammed in a bag, and get it in. Caught early it is a battery replacement. Caught late it is a battery replacement plus whatever it bent on the way. This is the one laptop repair where waiting genuinely costs money.

Screens, hinges, and the display conversation

MacBook display repair depends enormously on the model, and that is not a dodge, it is the actual situation. On some machines the display is a serviceable panel. On others the whole lid is a single assembly and replacing the screen means replacing that assembly, which is a substantially larger part. Common display symptoms and what they usually mean: cracked glass with a working backlight is physical damage and a straightforward if not cheap repair. A dark screen that shows an image under a flashlight is a backlight issue. An image on an external monitor but nothing on the built-in screen points at the display or its cable rather than the board. Horizontal or vertical lines that change when you move the lid point at a cable. We sort out which one it is at no charge before you commit.

Liquid spills on a laptop

Spills are the failure that most often ends a MacBook prematurely, and most of the damage is done in the first minute by the owner rather than the liquid. Shut it down immediately. Do not try to boot it to see whether it survived. Unplug it, turn it upside down like a tent so liquid runs out instead of further in, and bring it in with the power adapter.

Sugary drinks are worse than water because the residue is sticky and conductive and it keeps bridging contacts long after everything looks dry. Salt water is worse again, which matters more here than it would in most of the country.

At the bench we open it, disconnect power, and clean the board properly rather than drying it and hoping. Sometimes a spill takes the keyboard and nothing else, which is a repair. Sometimes it takes the board. Either way we tell you honestly what we find and what it would cost before you spend anything past the assessment. Data first, always

The question behind almost every laptop repair is really "are my files gone." Usually they are not. Storage is a separate component from most of what fails, so a machine that will not power on often still has a perfectly healthy drive inside it. On models where the storage is removable, recovery is frequently straightforward. On models where it is soldered to the board, it is harder and depends on what failed, and we will be honest about that rather than optimistic.

Tell us at the counter if there is something irreplaceable on the machine. It changes the order we do things in and it changes what we are willing to risk during the repair. And once your machine is healthy again, set up a backup, because the second time this happens it should be a nuisance rather than a loss.

Windows laptops and desktops too

We are not Mac-only. Windows laptops come through constantly and are often cheaper and easier to repair: screens, batteries, charge boards, keyboards, drives, memory, and no-boot diagnostics. Desktop towers get the same treatment, including power supplies, drives, and the general slow-death cleanup of a machine that has been on a floor collecting dust for five years.

The most common Windows laptop repair we do is a drive upgrade on a machine that still has a mechanical hard drive in it. Those computers feel broken and are not. Moving to a solid state drive transforms them, and cloning means you keep everything exactly as it was.

Repair or replace, answered honestly

Sometimes the right advice is not to repair. A very old machine that needs a display assembly and a battery and a keyboard is a machine where the total exceeds what a good used one costs, and we will say that rather than quietly booking three repairs. We sell pre-owned MacBooks and we take trades, so that conversation has an actual destination and is not just bad news.

Equally, we will tell you when a machine that feels finished is fine. A MacBook that boots slowly, runs hot, and dies off the charger sounds dead and is usually three routine repairs away from being a genuinely good computer for several more years. That is the most common happy outcome in this part of the shop.

What to bring, and finding the store

Bring the laptop, the power adapter, and your password or the ability to log in, because we cannot test a machine we cannot get into. If you have a backup, mention it. If you do not, mention that too, because it changes how carefully we tread.

Basic diagnostics are free. Every repair carries our Limited Lifetime Warranty on the part we installed and our workmanship. Laptop work takes longer than phone work and we give you realistic timelines rather than hopeful ones, usually a couple of days for anything involving an ordered part.
