The iPhone repairs we do most

If you lined up every iPhone that comes into the Saugus store, the order would be screens, batteries, charge ports, back glass, and then everything else. That order has barely changed in years, and it is useful to know because it means most of what walks in the door is a known, priced, same-visit repair rather than a mystery.

The mystery cases exist too, and they are the reason free diagnostics matter. A phone that boots to a black screen might be a display, a battery that cannot deliver current, or a board problem. A phone that will not charge might be a port, a cable, a battery, or corrosion. You should not have to pay to find out which. We open it, we test it, and we tell you which one it is before you commit to anything.

iPhone screens: what you get for the price

Screen replacement is the bread and butter, and most iPhone screens are about an hour at the bench. The honest part of the conversation is the panel itself. Older iPhones used LCD displays and newer ones use OLED, and OLED panels cost meaningfully more, which is why the range on a Pro or Max model is so much higher than on an 11 or an XR. The iPhone 11 in particular is one of the easiest and most common screens we do, and the price reflects that.

We will tell you what type of panel is going in and what the tradeoffs are. Aftermarket panels vary in quality, and the differences show up in brightness, color, and how the touch layer feels at the edges. Where a feature like True Tone behaves differently after a screen swap, we say so at the counter rather than letting you discover it at home. The one thing we will not do is tell you everything is identical when it is not.

A related situation worth knowing: if the glass is cracked but the display underneath is perfect and touch works everywhere, you are not in an emergency. Cracked glass on a modern iPhone is fused to the display assembly, so the repair is the same either way, but you have time to plan it. What you should not do is wait until glass starts lifting, because then it is cutting your thumb and letting moisture in.

Batteries, and how to tell it is really the battery

A three-year-old iPhone that shuts down at 30 percent on a cold morning has a battery problem, not a software problem, and no amount of settings changes will fix it. New England winters expose weak batteries first: the chemistry cannot deliver peak current when it is cold, so the phone protects itself by shutting off. If your phone dies in the car in January and comes back to life when you plug it in warm, that is the whole diagnosis.

We check actual battery health before recommending a replacement, because occasionally the battery is fine and something else is draining it. When it is the battery, it is one of the most satisfying repairs there is: the phone goes from an anxiety source back to a phone. Typical turnaround is under an hour.

Swollen batteries are the urgent version. If the screen has started lifting away from the frame, or there is a visible gap along one edge, stop using the phone, stop charging it, and bring it in. A swollen cell is a physical problem that only gets worse, and it can push hard enough to crack a perfectly good screen.

Charge ports, and the thing to try first

Before you pay anybody anything, try a different cable. It is the cable more often than people expect, and a good shop will tell you that instead of quietly selling you a port. If a known-good cable does not fix it, the next most likely cause is a port packed with lint, and on a phone that lives in a pocket that is extremely common. We clean it out and test it, and a fair number of "broken" charge ports walk out fixed for the cost of the free diagnostic.

When the port genuinely is worn or corroded, it is a replaceable part. Corrosion is the local version of this problem: if you live in Lynn, Revere, or Nahant, salt gets into the port and eats contacts over time without the phone ever going swimming. Ports also die from side pressure, which is what happens when a phone gets used while plugged in and the cable gets levered against the opening.

Back glass, cameras, speakers, and Face ID

Back glass is its own repair and on most modern iPhones it is a genuinely involved one, because the glass is bonded to the frame. It is worth doing when the back is shedding shards or when moisture is getting in, and it is cosmetic when the crack is clean and stable. We will tell you which situation you are in.

Camera glass cracks are common and often mistaken for a dead camera. If your photos are suddenly hazy or full of light streaks, look at the lens cover on the back before assuming the camera module is gone. That is frequently a cheaper repair than people fear. Actual camera module failures, speakers that went muffled, and microphones that stopped working on calls are all replaceable parts.

Face ID deserves an honest paragraph. The components that make Face ID work are paired to the individual phone at the factory, so if those specific parts are physically damaged, Face ID may not be restorable regardless of who does the work or what parts they use. That is an Apple design decision and not something any shop can talk its way around. We will tell you that up front rather than taking your money and shrugging afterward. Everything else on the phone can still be repaired, and most people opt to keep the device working with a passcode.

Water damage on the North Shore

We are minutes from Revere Beach and Nahant, and that shows. Salt water is the worst case for a phone because the salt left behind keeps corroding the board long after the device is dry, so the clock never really stops. If your iPhone goes in the ocean: power it off, leave it off, do not charge it, and do not put it in rice. Rice does nothing except absorb the hours that actually mattered.

Bring it in and we open it, clean the board properly, and assess what survived. We are honest about odds because liquid damage is genuinely unpredictable, and we would rather tell you a phone is a coin flip than pretend it is a sure thing. Do we have the part for your iPhone?

The mix at the Saugus bench skews a little older than you might expect, and that is a good thing. Plenty of people on this corridor are carrying phones that are three, four, or five years old and working perfectly well, which means a screen and a battery is often the entire difference between a phone you resent and a phone you like. The SE models, the XR, the 11, and the 12 and 13 families are all extremely serviceable and parts are readily available.

Newer Pro and Max models come in too, usually for screens and back glass, and those carry the higher end of the ranges below because the panels themselves cost more. If your model is unusual or the part is not on our shelf, we tell you the day it arrives before you leave the counter, so you can plan around it rather than calling to check.

Diagnostics, data, and the warranty

Basic diagnostics are free. That is the entire policy and there is no version of it where a diagnostic turns into a bill you did not agree to. If the repair is not worth doing on your device, we say so and talk about a refurbished replacement or what your current phone is worth on trade.

Your data stays on the phone for standard screen, battery, and port work. We do not need to wipe anything and we do not. Back it up anyway if you can, because that is just good practice, but it is not a precondition. For liquid damage and board-level work, data is part of the conversation from the start.

Every iPhone repair we do carries our Limited Lifetime Warranty covering the part we installed and our workmanship. If that part fails, bring it back and we handle it. A new crack from a new drop is not covered, which is the honest limit of any repair warranty, and we would rather tell you now.
