The surprise on this phone, so it is not a surprise

Here is the thing about the 14 Pro that catches everybody at our counter: the shattered back costs more to fix than a shattered screen. We say it early because nobody enjoys hearing it at the register.

The display glass on a Pro is hardened and it earns its reputation. We see these come off pavement with an untouched screen and a back that looks like a windshield. But the rear glass is fixed into the body of the phone rather than being a separate panel you unclip, so a replacement means opening everything up. Hours of work instead of minutes.

If you have a friend with the plain iPhone 14 from the same year, they got a better deal on this one repair, because Apple built that phone so the back comes off on its own. Buying the Pro bought you a better camera and a more expensive back, and nobody mentions that at the point of sale.

So do not price your repair by what looks worse. Get the free diagnostic. And if a hairline has appeared at one corner of your display since a drop, come in soon, because those spread over the following week and can take the touch layer with them.

Face ID keeps working when you get it back

Figure an hour for a display when the part is on the shelf. The step that decides your Face ID is moving the hardware that recognizes your face from your broken screen onto the new one. Done properly, your phone unlocks exactly as it always has.

The honest exception: if the fall destroyed that hardware, no shop can bring it back, because Apple pairs it to your exact phone. We check yours during the free diagnostic so the decision gets made with real information rather than optimism.

This model brought the Dynamic Island and the Always-On display, and both depend on the screen. With a lower grade of panel some of that can differ, and your phone will post a note in Settings about a non-Apple screen or battery. Nothing stops working, and we cover all of it at the counter before we open anything.

Your photos stay on your phone

We never erase devices, and none of these repairs require touching your data. Photos, messages, apps, and logins are exactly where you left them when you collect it.

Your device passcode is the one thing we ask for, and only so we can test the repair before you walk out: touch across the whole screen, Face ID, the cameras, charging, and audio. Your Apple account password is not needed and we will not ask for it.

Back up beforehand if you get the chance. Sensible habit, quick to do.

Choosing a panel, with both numbers in front of you

The parts market for this generation is in good shape. Replacement screens have matured, genuine-grade parts are available, and we quote both because the right answer depends on you rather than on the phone.

Buy up if you are outdoors a lot or you are particular about color, because that is where the gap lives: brightness in direct sun, color accuracy, and how the always-on screen looks. Save the money if the phone mostly moves between a desk, a pocket, and a car, and put the difference toward a battery or a case that prevents the next visit.

We do not carry the cheapest tier. Ghost taps and dead touch zones mean you come back, and that costs you more than it ever saved. Whatever we fit is covered by our Limited Lifetime Warranty on the part and the workmanship, and never on the next drop.

• Battery not lasting. These are at the age where the cell starts showing. A phone that falls off a cliff at 40 percent, or dies in a cold car and revives when warm, has a battery problem and not a software one.
• Charging trouble. New cable first, then suspect lint packed into the port, which we generally clear during the free diagnostic without charging for a part.
• Foggy or streaky photos. The camera bump on a 14 Pro is large and proud, so the glass over the cameras cracks. That is usually the whole problem and much cheaper than a camera.
• A camera that genuinely failed. Expensive parts, which is why the cheap cause gets ruled out first, always.
• Buzzing speakers or muffled calls. Individual parts rather than a totalled phone, and usually same-visit.
• Water. Off, stays off, no charging, no rice. Get it onto a bench fast and we will be honest about the odds.

Is fixing it the right move?

For most people, yes. Your 14 Pro runs current software, the cameras still hold their own against much newer phones, and every repair on this page costs a fraction of a new Pro. Keeping a phone you already own is normally the cheapest move available to you.

Check two things first, and we will raise both rather than waiting for you to. Is it still covered? Plenty of these are, and we handle insurance claim repairs, so tell us and we will give you a straight opinion instead of quietly taking the job. And how much is actually broken? A cracked front, a shattered back, a worn battery, and a failing port on one phone can add up past the point where fixing it makes sense.

If you get to that point, you still have options. We buy phones as they sit, damage included, through our buyback, and everything on the pre-owned shelf is tested and warrantied.
