What to do in the first 10 minutes

Power the device off and leave it off. Do not check whether it still works. Every second it runs with liquid inside it is a chance for a short circuit to take out something that was fine.

Do not plug it in. Charging a wet device is the single most common way a recoverable phone becomes an unrecoverable one, because it puts current across contacts that are bridged by liquid.

Get the obvious water out. Dry the outside, tip it so the ports face down, and if there is a case on it, take the case off, because a case holds water against the seams.

Then bring it in. If you cannot get to us immediately, leave it powered off somewhere dry and at room temperature. Do not use a hair dryer, which pushes moisture deeper and can heat the battery, and do not put it on a radiator.

Why rice is worse than doing nothing

Rice has become folk wisdom and it is genuinely counterproductive. It does not pull moisture out from under shields and connectors where the liquid actually sits, it introduces starch and dust into ports, and above all it convinces people to wait three days. Those three days are exactly the window where an open-and-clean would have saved the device.

The damage from liquid is mostly not the water. It is corrosion, which starts as soon as liquid touches a board and continues the entire time the device sits. Drying the outside does not stop it. Only opening the device and properly cleaning the board stops it. Every day of rice is a day of corrosion with nobody doing anything about it.

Salt water is a different problem

This is the North Shore, so we need to talk about the ocean specifically. Salt water is dramatically more aggressive than fresh water. It conducts far better, so shorts are more likely while the device is wet, and the salt left behind after it dries is itself corrosive and hygroscopic, meaning it keeps pulling moisture from the air and keeps the reaction going for weeks.

A phone that went into Revere Beach or off a boat in Nahant is a same-day situation if you have any choice about it. A phone that went in a freshwater lake in Wakefield or a sink in Melrose has a little more slack, though not much. In both cases the treatment is the same and the difference is how fast the window closes.

One more local note: water resistance ratings do not save you here. They are lab ratings for new, undamaged, factory-sealed devices, and seals and adhesive fatigue with age and with every previous repair. A three-year-old phone is not the phone that earned the rating, and the rating was never about salt water anyway.

What we actually do at the bench

We open the device, disconnect the battery to stop current flow, and get a look at the board. Then the board comes out and gets properly cleaned, which means removing corrosion and residue rather than wiping it and hoping. Shields come off where they need to, because that is where liquid hides. After cleaning and drying, we reassemble enough to test and see what actually survived.

Then you get a real answer. Sometimes the phone powers up and works and the whole thing is over. Sometimes it powers up but a specific component is gone, a camera, a speaker, a charge port, and that becomes a normal repair conversation. Sometimes the board is too far gone, and in that case the conversation turns to data.

Typical turnaround is 24 to 72 hours, because drying and testing properly cannot be rushed. We will not tell you an hour to make you feel better.

Honest odds, and why nobody should promise you anything

Liquid damage is the one category where an honest shop refuses to make promises. Two identical phones that went in the same water can have completely different outcomes based on how long they ran afterward, whether anyone plugged them in, what the liquid was, and where it landed inside. Anyone who tells you before opening it that they can definitely save it is guessing at best.

What we will do is tell you what we see once it is open, what we think the odds look like, and what it would cost to go further, before you spend anything beyond the assessment. If it is a coin flip, we will say it is a coin flip. If it is unlikely, we will say that and let you decide whether to try anyway, which plenty of people do when the photos matter.

When the phone is gone but the data is not

This is the part people care about most and ask about last. A device that will never work again can still give up its data in a lot of cases, because the storage is a separate component from whatever failed. If there are photos of a kid or a parent on that phone, say so at the counter immediately, because it changes the entire approach. We prioritize data differently than we prioritize function.

Data recovery on a liquid-damaged device is case by case and we price it that way rather than pretending there is a flat rate. What we can tell you is that it is frequently possible, that it is worth asking about before you write the phone off, and that the free diagnostic includes finding out whether it is on the table.

Laptops, tablets, and spills

A spill on a laptop follows the same rules with higher stakes. Shut it down immediately, unplug it, do not try to boot it to see, and turn it upside down like a tent so liquid runs out rather than further in. Sugary drinks are worse than water because the sugar residue is sticky and conductive. Then bring it in with the power adapter.

Laptop spills often kill a keyboard while leaving the rest of the machine fine, which is a repair rather than a disaster. They can also kill a board outright. Getting here fast, because speed is the whole game

If you are on your way and the phone is off, leave it off. Do not test it in the car. That is the single most useful thing you can do between the accident and the bench, and it costs you nothing.
