Cracked back? This is the one phone where that is cheap to fix

Good news first. On the standard iPhone 14, a shattered back is an ordinary repair at an ordinary price. On every Pro model, and on the iPhone 13 and everything before it, the rear glass is fixed into the body, which turns the same damage into hours of work and a bill above what a screen costs.

Apple built your phone so the back is a serviceable panel. Same spiderwebbed glass, dramatically smaller number, entirely because of which model you chose. We have had customers standing at the counter comparing quotes with a friend holding a 14 Pro, convinced we had made an error. We had not.

So if yours is cracked, fix it. A broken back sheds slivers into your palm and lets moisture reach the internals, and on your phone there is no financial reason to put up with that.

Opening from the back also makes the rest cleaner. Batteries and charge ports are quicker to reach, and the display does not need to come off for jobs that used to demand it, which means less handling risk to a screen that is perfectly fine.

Face ID keeps working when you get it back

Roughly an hour for a screen when the panel is on the shelf. The step that decides your Face ID is moving the hardware that recognizes your face from your broken screen onto the replacement. Do that properly and Face ID carries on as if nothing happened.

The exception nobody can get around: if the fall physically destroyed that hardware, Face ID is gone for good, at our bench and at everyone else's, because Apple pairs it to your individual phone. We check it during the free diagnostic, up front, before any money changes hands.

Also worth hearing before we start: your phone posts a note in Settings when a screen or battery is not an Apple part, and the automatic color-warmth feature can behave differently depending on panel grade. Neither one keeps the phone from working normally.

Your photos stay on your phone

We do not erase devices, and nothing on this list requires touching your data. Photos, messages, apps, and logins are exactly where you left them when you collect the phone.

Your device passcode is all we need, and only so we can test the repair before handing it over: touch across the whole screen, Face ID, the cameras, charging, and audio. Your Apple account password is not required and we will not ask for it.

Which panel to buy

The parts market for this generation is in a good place. Quality replacement screens are widely available and the tiers we buy are genuinely good, so for most customers on a 14 we recommend those and quote genuine-grade alongside so you see both numbers.

The differences worth knowing: color temperature can read a little warmer or cooler, brightness in direct sun can be marginally lower, and the automatic color-warmth feature may not match exactly. Outdoor workers and people who notice color should buy up. Everyone else is better off putting the difference toward a battery or a case that prevents the next repair.

Repair, claim, or trade?

For a standard 14 the case for repairing is strong. Parts are mature, the phone handles current software easily, and the back glass advantage means even the scariest-looking damage stays affordable. Keeping a phone you already own is normally the cheapest option on the table.

Check coverage first, though. A good number of these are still inside a plan, and we handle insurance claim repairs, so raise it at the counter and we will give you an honest read on which route costs less.
