Why buy a refurbished phone at all

The honest case is straightforward. A three or four-year-old iPhone does everything most people actually do with a phone, and it costs a fraction of a current model. The things that genuinely improve year over year are cameras and a bit of speed, and if you are not doing something that depends on either, you are paying a large premium for a marginal difference.

The second reason is risk. What we check before a phone goes on the shelf

Everything goes over the same bench our repairs do. Battery health gets measured, not guessed at, and a phone with a tired battery either gets a new one or does not go out. The screen gets checked across the whole surface for dead touch zones, discoloration, and burn-in. Cameras front and back get tested, including the lens covers, because a hazy rear lens is easy to miss in a quick look.

Charge ports get tested with a real cable and inspected for corrosion, which matters on this coast more than most places. Speakers, earpiece, and microphones get tested on an actual call rather than a chime. Buttons, including the ones nobody thinks about until they fail. Face ID or Touch ID where the model has it. And the device gets confirmed clear of any activation lock, because a phone that cannot be activated is not a phone, it is a paperweight with a screen.

Which models are worth buying right now

The value curve in used iPhones is consistent and it is worth understanding before you shop. The steepest drop in price happens a couple of years after a model launches, while the phone is still entirely capable. That is the buying window, and it is why the models in the middle of the lineup, rather than the newest or the oldest, are almost always the best deal.

Practically, that tends to mean the SE models for anyone who wants small and cheap and does not care about cameras, the XR and 11 for people who want the most phone per dollar, and the 12 and 13 families for people who want something that will feel current for several more years. Pro models hold their value better and cost more used, which is fair, because the cameras are genuinely better.

Selling or trading your old phone

We buy phones. Bring the device, a photo ID, and your passcode, because we cannot take in a device we cannot unlock and verify. You will also need to sign out of the account on the phone, which we can walk you through at the counter if you are not sure how.

What we offer depends on model, storage, condition, and battery health. We will tell you the number and the reasoning behind it, and if it is not what you hoped, you are entirely free to walk out with your phone. A trade against something on our shelf usually nets you more than a straight cash sale, because that is simply how the economics of this work, and we will show you both numbers rather than only the one that suits us.

One thing worth knowing: a cracked phone is still worth something. People throw away or keep in a drawer a lot of devices that have real trade value, and it costs nothing to ask.

We stand behind what we sell. Ask about the specific coverage on the specific device before you buy it, because it varies with the model and the condition, and we would rather tell you exactly what you are getting than print a blanket promise on a website. Whatever it is, you will hear it plainly at the counter before you pay, not after.

You also get the practical advantage that we are five minutes off the road you already drive. If something is wrong with a device you bought from us, you bring it back in person to the people who sold it to you. That is a different relationship than shipping a phone back to a warehouse and waiting.

How to shop for a used phone anywhere, including not here

This is useful even if you never buy from us. Always check that the device is not locked to somebody else's account, because that is the single most common way used phone buyers get burned and it is unrecoverable. Ask for the battery health number, and be suspicious if the seller does not know it. Look at the screen with it off, under a light, at an angle, because that is how you see previous repairs, delamination, and burn-in that disappear on a bright display.

Test the cameras, all of them, and take an actual photo rather than opening the app. Plug a cable in and make sure it charges with the cable hanging loose, not held. Make a call and listen on both the earpiece and the speaker. Check every button.

If a price is dramatically below everything else, there is a reason, and the reason is usually one of the things above. That is not cynicism, it is just how a market works.
