Why an iPad costs and takes more than a phone

People assume tablet repair scales with the size of the screen. It does not really scale with size, it scales with how the thing is glued together. An iPad is a large, thin sheet of glass bonded around its entire perimeter to an aluminum frame, with a battery adhered to the inside of that frame, and getting the glass off without cracking it further or nicking a cable underneath is a heat, patience, and technique job.

That is also why a tablet screen usually takes longer than a phone screen. We are not racing the adhesive. On most iPad models the glass digitizer and the display are separate layers, which is genuinely good news: if the glass is spidered but the picture underneath is perfect and touch still works everywhere, you are frequently looking at a glass-only repair rather than a full display. On some models Apple bonded them together, and then it is one assembly and one price. We tell you which model you have before you agree to anything.

The second difference is the home button and the layers under the glass on older iPads. Some of those parts are paired to the device and have to be carefully transferred rather than replaced. That is normal, it is part of the job, and it is a reason to have somebody do this who has done it more than twice.

The four things we see most

• Cracked glass. Almost always a drop from standing height onto something unforgiving, or a tablet that was stepped on while it was on the floor in a case it had outgrown.
• Batteries that will not hold a day. Tablets live longer than phones, so more of them reach the age where the cell is simply done. A five-year-old iPad that needs a charger by lunch has a battery problem, not a software problem.
• Charge ports. Tablets get charged while lying flat and get yanked by the cable, which levers the port sideways. Lightning and USB-C both suffer from this.
• Will not turn on at all. This is the one with the widest range of outcomes, from a dead battery that needs a real charge to a board fault. It is also the one where a free diagnostic saves you the most.

There is a fifth category that we will handle honestly: the bent tablet. Once an iPad frame is bent, glass will not sit flat against it, and a new screen installed on a warped frame is a new screen that will crack again. Sometimes a frame can be worked back close enough to be sound. Sometimes it cannot, and we say so rather than taking the job and hoping.

Android tablets, Fire tablets, and school Chromebooks

iPads are the majority but they are not all of it. Galaxy Tab screens and batteries are regular work, and Samsung tablets have a similar OLED-versus-LCD price story to Samsung phones. Amazon Fire tablets come in cracked constantly because they are the tablet families hand to kids, and the honest answer there is often that the repair approaches the cost of the device. We will say that out loud instead of quietly charging you for it.

Touchscreen Chromebooks and school-issued devices are a category of their own, and the towns around us issue a lot of them. Cracked lids, snapped hinges, keys pried off, and charge ports pushed into the case are the standard four. If a device belongs to a school district there may be a district process you need to follow first, so check before you pay out of pocket. For families and for the districts themselves, we handle these in volume and can talk about turnaround on a batch rather than one at a time.

Is it worth repairing?

This is the question we get asked most on tablets and the one most shops dodge. Here is the way we think about it.

If the tablet still gets software updates, still runs the apps you need at a speed that does not annoy you, and the problem is one physical thing, repair is almost always the better value. A glass repair on an iPad that otherwise works perfectly costs a fraction of replacing it, and the rest of the device has years left.

If the tablet is old enough that apps have started refusing to install, or if it needs a screen and a battery and the charge port, the math turns. At that point you are rebuilding most of a device that is already behind, and you would do better putting the money toward a tested pre-owned tablet and selling the old one toward it.

The middle case is the classroom or kitchen tablet that only has to do three things. If a tablet is a recipe screen and a video player, its age does not matter and a cheap repair keeps it working for years. We will tell you which of those three situations you are in based on what the device actually is, not on what we would rather sell.

Fleets break differently than personal devices. A tablet that gets handed between shifts, mounted on a cart, or carried to and from a job site fails at the port and the glass, over and over, and the cost that hurts is not the repair, it is the device being gone for two weeks. What to do before you bring a tablet in

Back it up if it still powers on, because that is the version of the advice that actually helps. If it does not power on, do not spend an evening trying to force it, and specifically do not leave it on a charger that is getting hot. Bring the charger and cable you have been using, because sometimes they are the problem and we can rule them out in a minute.

Know the passcode. A tablet we cannot get past the lock screen is a tablet we cannot fully test after the repair, and we will not ask you for the code for any reason other than testing. If the device belongs to a school or an employer, find out whether it is supervised or managed before you arrive, because that can change what anybody is allowed to do with it.
