How to know it is really the battery
There are four reliable tells, and if you have two of them it is the battery.
One: the phone dies suddenly at a charge level that should be fine, typically somewhere between 20 and 40 percent. Two: it will not make it through a normal day anymore when it used to, without your usage having changed. Three: it gets hot while charging, or charges much more slowly than it did. Four: the device only stays alive while plugged in.
What is not a battery problem: a phone that drains fast for a couple of days after a software update, which is usually reindexing and settles down. A phone that will not charge at all, which is more often a port or a cable. And a phone that shuts off at a wide range of charge levels with no pattern, which can be a board issue. New England winter is a battery test
This deserves its own section because we are in Massachusetts and every January the store fills up with the same complaint. A lithium battery cannot deliver peak current when it is cold. A healthy battery handles that fine. A worn battery cannot, so the phone shuts itself off rather than browning out, often at 30 or 40 percent, usually in a car or on a walk from a parking lot.
The classic sign that the cold is only the messenger: the phone comes back to life indoors or plugged in, showing roughly the charge it had before it died. That is a battery that was already weak in October and got exposed in January. Replacing it fixes the winter problem and the rest of the year too.
Swollen batteries: stop and bring it in
A swollen battery is the one battery situation that is genuinely urgent. On a phone it shows up as a screen lifting away from the frame, a visible gap along one edge, or a back panel starting to separate. On a laptop it shows up as a trackpad that clicks strangely or does not click at all, a case that will not sit flat, or a lid that has developed a gap. On a tablet it looks like the whole device has gently bowed.
If you see any of that: stop charging the device, stop using it, and do not press the screen back down. A swollen cell is a chemical process that continues, and it can crack a perfectly good screen or bend a laptop chassis if it is left alone long enough. Bring it in, and if it is a laptop, carry it flat rather than in a tight bag.

Phones, tablets, and the adhesive problem
Phone batteries are glued in, and on most modern phones getting the old one out properly means heat, patience, and the right adhesive removal rather than prying. Tablet batteries are the same idea at a larger scale, so they take longer, generally same day rather than while-you-wait. How to make the new one last
A few things genuinely help and most of the internet advice does not. Heat is the real enemy: a phone left on a dashboard in July or charging under a pillow ages faster than one that stays cool. Avoid running to zero and back to 100 every single day if you can; battery chemistry prefers the middle. Fast charging constantly is convenient and slightly costly over years, so using it when you need it and a slower charger overnight is a reasonable balance.
What does not matter: closing apps constantly, which does nothing for battery life on modern phones. What does matter and gets ignored: a bad cable or a cheap charger that delivers unstable power can make charging worse and occasionally damages a port.
Expect a couple of years of good service out of a phone battery with normal use, longer if you are gentle. When it starts slipping, it slips fast, which is why the repair feels so dramatic.

How long does a battery replacement take?

Will I lose my data?
No. A battery replacement does not touch your data and nothing gets wiped.
My phone dies at 30 percent when it is cold outside. Is that normal?
It is common but it is not normal. It means the battery is worn enough that it cannot deliver current in the cold. Replacing it fixes the winter shutdowns and the rest of the year too.
My laptop trackpad stopped clicking properly. Related?
Very likely a swollen battery pushing up from underneath. Stop charging it, carry it flat, and bring it in. Caught early it is just a battery. Left alone it can bend the chassis.
