There is one case where nobody can help: a drop hard enough to destroy that hardware outright. Apple ties those parts to your individual phone, so once they are damaged, Face ID is gone permanently at every shop in Massachusetts and everywhere else. Two smaller notes we give at the counter. Your phone may display a message in Settings saying the screen or battery is not an Apple part, which changes nothing about how it works. And the automatic color-warmth setting can behave slightly differently with a replacement panel. Neither one is a surprise if you hear it first.

Nothing gets erased

Your photos, your messages, your apps, and your logins stay exactly where they are. Screens, batteries, and charge ports never require touching your data, and we do not wipe devices under any circumstances.

We do ask for your passcode, and there is a reason: it lets us test the phone properly before you take it home, including touch across the whole screen, Face ID, the cameras, and the speakers. We will never ask for your Apple account password, because nothing on this list needs it.

Back it up anyway if you get the chance. It is sensible on any phone this age and it takes a few minutes.

What else goes wrong with an 11, and what we do about it

• The battery gives out early. A phone that falls off a cliff at 40 percent, or dies in a cold car and comes back when warm, has a tired battery. It is a quick, inexpensive fix and it makes the phone feel years younger. We read your real battery health first so you are not paying for the wrong thing.
• It will not charge. Change the cable before you pay anybody. After that, the usual culprit is lint compacted in the bottom of the port, which frequently gets cleared during the free diagnostic without a part.
• Hazy or streaked photos. Usually cracked glass over the camera rather than a failed camera, and that is a much smaller repair. We always check the cheap explanation first.
• The back is cracked. A bigger job than the front on this model, so we will be straight about whether it needs doing now. If it is shedding glass or letting moisture in, do it.
• Nobody can hear you on calls. Speakers and microphones are individual parts and usually a same-visit fix.
• It went swimming. Power it off, keep it off, do not charge it, and do not use rice. Getting it to a bench quickly is the only thing that actually improves the odds, and we are honest about them.

Fix it or replace it?

On an iPhone 11 we will nearly always tell you to fix it, and that costs us the bigger sale. Buyback values on this model have flattened out, so trading it in does not put much toward a replacement, while the repair is cheap enough to pay for itself in a couple of months of not having a phone payment.

The one time we say stop is when the problems pile up: cracked front, cracked back, exhausted battery, and a corroded port on the same phone.
