Off the causeway and west

Everyone leaves Nahant the same way, across the causeway toward Lynn, so directions start there. Once you are off the causeway and onto the Lynn side, you have two reasonable choices. You can run north into Lynn and cut west on Western Avenue, which is Route 107, toward Saugus and Route 1. Or you can head south along Route 1A toward Revere and pick up Squire Road, which is Route 60, west to Route 1.

The Lynn route is usually shorter. The Revere route is sometimes faster in summer when the beach traffic is bad on the Lynn side. Either way, when you get to Route 1 you want the southbound side, and if you arrive northbound you keep going to the jughandle at Essex Street and loop back down. From the middle of Nahant, budget about 20 minutes, more on a July weekend when the causeway and the beach roads are loaded.

Salt air is the whole story here

Nahant is surrounded by ocean on effectively every side, and salt does not need a dunking to do damage. It rides in on humidity, settles in charge ports and speaker grilles, and quietly corrodes contacts over months. The symptoms are familiar to anyone who lives out there: a cable that has to be seated just right, a charger that works at home but not in the car, a speaker that sounds like it is underwater, a phone that suddenly will not charge past a certain point.

A lot of that is cleanable rather than replaceable, and we check that first. If the port is genuinely worn or corroded through, it is a replaceable part on most models and not a reason to replace the device.

Actual salt water immersion is the urgent version. Do not charge the device, do not put it in rice, and get it to a bench the same day if you can.
