Which iPads we buy

The standard iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad Pro, across a good span of generations. We buy Android tablets too, including Galaxy Tab, though the Apple side generally holds value better and the numbers reflect that.

Condition does not disqualify a tablet. Cracked glass on an iPad is expected and we repair it, so it is priced in rather than being a reason to refuse. Same for a battery that no longer lasts, a charge port that has to be wiggled, or a tablet that will not power on. The only thing that genuinely stops a sale is an account lock, which is covered below.

One iPad-specific case worth calling out: a bent frame. Thin tablets bend when they are sat on or carried loose in a bag, and a bend affects whether glass can seat properly. It does not make the device worthless, but it is one of the few conditions that noticeably changes what a tablet is worth, so it is worth knowing before you arrive with expectations.

What drives the value on a tablet

• Model line and generation. An iPad Pro sits well above a base iPad of the same year, and Air and mini fall in between.
• Storage capacity, which moves the number more on tablets than people expect, since the higher tiers were expensive new.
• Cellular versus Wi-Fi only. A cellular model is worth more, and a surprising number of people do not know which one they own. Look for the antenna line across the top of the back.
• Screen and frame condition, including bends as noted above.
• Battery health, which we can read directly.
• Whether it still receives software updates. A tablet that has aged out of updates is worth less because apps start refusing to install on it.
• Accessories. A keyboard case or a compatible pencil can add to the total, so bring them if you have them.

We explain what drove the number. If a small repair would add more than it costs, we will say so and let you decide, which is a conversation you will not get from a mail-in form.

Turn off Find My, and check whether the iPad is managed

The same activation lock rule applies to iPads as to iPhones. An iPad still signed into your Apple account cannot be set up by anyone else, which makes it unsellable. Sign out of your Apple account, turn off Find My, and erase the device before you come in. If the screen is too broken to use, remove the tablet from your device list through another Apple device or a browser.

There is a second issue that is specific to tablets, and it catches people out. iPads issued by schools and employers are frequently enrolled in a management system, which means the organization controls the device regardless of who is physically holding it. A managed iPad shows a configuration profile and often reinstalls its restrictions automatically after a wipe.

If your tablet came from a school district, a hospital, or an employer, it may still belong to them even if nobody asked for it back, and we cannot buy a device that is enrolled in somebody else’s management system. Check before you make the trip. If you genuinely own it and it is still enrolled, the organization has to release it from their side.

Before you come in

Back up your photos and anything else you want to keep, because every device we buy gets wiped. Take out the SIM card if it is a cellular model, since that is the one people forget on tablets more than on phones.

Have photo identification on you, since every purchase is recorded. Bring the charger, the keyboard case, and the pencil if you have them, since those can add to the total. And if you have more than one tablet at home, bring them all, because tablets accumulate in households more quietly than phones do.

In person, not in a box

Tablets are awkward to ship and easy to damage in transit, and a large sheet of glass in a box is exactly the item you least want re-graded after arrival. Buyback sites quote from your description and then revise after inspection, and the revision is never upward.

Selling privately means meeting a stranger to hand over a device worth a few hundred dollars, and tablets attract more haggling than phones do because buyers know the market is softer.

Sell, trade, or keep using it

If the tablet is genuinely done for your purposes, selling is straightforward. Trading it toward something on our shelf tends to go further, and plenty of people trade an aging iPad toward a newer one or toward a phone.

The third path deserves a mention because tablets are the device people write off too early. A tablet that only has to be a recipe screen, a video player, or a kid’s drawing pad does not need to be current. If yours is slow but the job it does is simple, a battery or glass repair can keep it working for years at a fraction of what replacing it costs. And an iPad with a cracked screen sitting unused is a repair away from being useful again.
