Check the picture, not the cracks

Here is the two-minute test that decides your bill. Ignore the spiderweb and look at the image underneath it. Clean picture, no lines, no dark blotches, no spreading color? Then the display is fine and you are only buying the glass on top, which is the inexpensive part.

Damage in the picture itself means both layers, and the number roughly doubles. You get that answer at the counter, for free, before you decide anything. Nobody has to commit to a repair to find out what it is going to cost.

This works in your favor because of how Apple built this particular iPad. On tablets where the glass and display are fused, any crack means replacing one expensive assembly. Here they come apart, so a shattered face very often costs you glass and nothing else.

And yours almost certainly broke at a corner, with the cracks running inward. These tablets live in backpacks and land on tile and cafeteria tables, and the aluminum frame funnels the impact straight into the nearest corner. It is the most predictable damage pattern of any device we service.

Stop using it cracked, and do not let a kid keep using it

Loose glass cuts fingers. That is the first reason and the one that matters most. The second is financial: every press on a broken touch layer pushes the damage down toward the display underneath, which is exactly how an inexpensive repair becomes a costly one.

So the sooner it comes in, the more likely you pay the smaller number. If you have noticed the screen lifting at one edge, come in sooner still, because that usually means a swollen battery pressing from inside and it does not improve on its own.

While it is here we also check the frame. A hard enough landing bends the aluminum, and fresh glass on a frame that is no longer flat cracks again within weeks. We would rather tell you the tablet needs more than glass than sell you a repair that fails in a month and sends you back here annoyed.

Touch ID survives, and so does everything on the tablet

The home button carries Touch ID and it moves onto the new glass as part of the repair. Done carefully, your fingerprint unlock behaves exactly as it did before. If the drop destroyed the button itself, Touch ID is permanently gone at any shop because Apple pairs it to your tablet, and the iPad works perfectly well with a passcode. We tell you that up front, not at pickup.

Your data stays put. Glass, display, battery, and port repairs never require touching it, and we do not wipe devices. Photos, schoolwork, apps, and logins are all where you left them.

We ask for the passcode so we can test touch across the full surface before you take it home, which is the only honest way to confirm the repair is good. Your Apple account password is not needed and we will not ask for it.

How long it takes, and what we put in

Tablet glass varies in quality more than phone screens do, and the bottom of the market is genuinely poor. You feel it in touch tracking near the edges, in how the surface responds to a stylus, and in glass that sits slightly proud of the bezel and traps dirt.
