Which case actually saves your screen?

Here is what a decade of cracked screens teaches you. Phones do not usually break flat on their backs. They break on a corner, because a phone dropped from waist height rotates, lands on one corner, and that corner transmits the shock straight into the glass. Which means the only part of a case that really matters is the corner.

So look for raised corners and a lip that sits proud of the screen. The lip is what keeps the glass off the pavement when the phone lands face down, and it is the single most predictive feature of whether a case did its job. A slim case with corners flush to the phone is jewelry. It protects against scratches and nothing else.

The other factor is what the case is made of. Materials that absorb and dissipate energy beat materials that simply resist it. A hard shell transfers the impact through to the phone. A case with a shock-absorbing layer takes some of it. If you want the honest recommendation: a case with reinforced corners, a real screen lip, and some give in the material will outperform a thinner, prettier case every time, and it costs less than any screen repair we do.

We keep cases for current iPhone and Galaxy models, plus the older models people are still carrying, because plenty of people around here are running a phone that came out four years ago and cannot find a case for it anywhere. Ask, because what is on the wall is not always all of it.

Screen protectors, and why installation matters

A tempered glass protector is a sacrificial layer. When a phone lands on a corner or gets caught by a key, the protector takes the crack instead of the display. People bring us phones with a shattered protector over an untouched screen all the time, and that is the product working exactly as intended.

What ruins protectors is installation. A dust speck trapped under the glass becomes a permanent bubble and a stress point. A protector installed a millimeter off center lifts at the edge and peels within a week. We install them at the counter, properly, with the screen cleaned first, and if it goes on wrong it comes off and we start again with a new one. It takes a couple of minutes and it is worth having somebody who does it daily do it.

Two practical notes. On phones with a fingerprint reader under the display, the protector has to be compatible with it, because thickness and material affect whether the sensor can read through it. Ask before you buy, and we will tell you which ones work with your model. And if your phone has a curved edge, flat protectors will not seal to the curve, so you need one designed for it.

Many protector brands include a replacement program of some kind, where a cracked protector can be replaced under the manufacturer terms. Ask at the counter what the brand you are buying offers and we will walk you through how to use it.

Chargers and cables: the cheap-cable problem is real

We see the downstream consequences of bad charging gear constantly, and it is the accessory category where buying cheap actually costs you money.

A poorly made cable or charger can deliver unstable power, and unstable power is hard on a battery over time. It also runs hot, and heat is the primary enemy of lithium cells. The phone that lives on a gas station charger in a hot car all summer is the phone whose battery health falls off a cliff by winter. That is not superstition, it is chemistry.

Then there is the mechanical damage. A cheap connector that is slightly out of spec wears the inside of your charge port every time you plug it in, and after a few months you have a port that only holds a connection at one angle. We replace a lot of charge ports that were killed by cables.

What to look for: cables with reinforced strain relief where the cable meets the connector, since that is where they fail, and charging bricks rated properly for your device. Fast charging is only fast if the brick, the cable, and the phone all support the same standard, and a mismatched set quietly charges at the slowest speed in the chain. If you are not sure what your phone wants, bring it in and we will match it.

The rest of the wall

Beyond cases, glass, and cables, the useful stuff: power banks for people who are out all day, car mounts and car chargers for the Route 1 commute, wireless chargers, wired and Bluetooth earbuds, memory cards, adapters and dongles for the ports manufacturers keep removing, and tablet cases and stands. Controller and console accessories too, because people picking up a repaired console frequently need a cable or a stand while they are here.

The through-line is that we stock what we would use. We are not trying to fill a wall, and if something does not hold up we stop carrying it, because the customer who bought it comes back to the same counter.

Buy it with the repair, walk out set up

The best time to put a case and a protector on a phone is the moment a brand new screen goes into it. The glass is perfect, it is already in our hands, and the protector goes on without a single speck under it. If you are in for a screen repair, ask, and we will do the whole thing before you leave.

Same for a new or pre-owned device bought here. It leaves the counter protected, charged, and set up, not in a box with a wish of good luck. That is the difference between buying a phone from a shop with a bench and buying one from a kiosk.
