Spilled something? The first five minutes matter more than we do

Shut it down. Not sleep, not close the lid, all the way off. Do not plug it in. Stand it upside down like a tent so whatever went in runs back out instead of further in. Then bring it here.

The keyboard is the problem. Every key is an opening and the logic board sits right underneath, so liquid reaches the board almost immediately. What actually destroys machines is power running through a wet board, and then corrosion, which keeps eating connections for days after everything feels dry to the touch. Sugary drinks and anything with salt are the worst, because the residue conducts and does not evaporate.

Give it a few days to dry out on its own and you usually turn a repairable machine into a parts machine. When one arrives quickly, the job is a full teardown, a proper board cleaning, and a frank assessment. We are honest about the odds on liquid because liquid is genuinely unpredictable, and a coin flip described accurately beats a sure thing described dishonestly.

Trackpad will not click? Check whether it sits flat

Put the laptop on a table and see if it rocks. If it does, or if there is a visible gap where the lid meets the body, you almost certainly have a swollen battery pushing up from inside, and that is why the trackpad stopped clicking. Battery life is almost never the first symptom.

Stop charging it and bring it in. A swollen battery keeps expanding and presses on everything around it, including parts that are currently fine and would be expensive to replace later.

Two other common failures, neither of which is your fault. Keys that repeat, stick, or stop working on machines from the butterfly keyboard era are a known design problem that Apple ran a service program over. And bright, uneven patches along the bottom of the screen on certain 13-inch models are the cable to the display wearing at the hinge, which turns into a screen that cuts out at certain lid angles and eventually does not come back. Both are repairable, and both cost less to deal with early.

Will I get my files back if it will not turn on?

On Apple silicon machines and on Intel models with the T2 chip, the storage is soldered to the logic board. There is no drive to remove and read in another computer.

That reshapes everything about a dead machine. Recovering data from a MacBook that will not boot is board-level work, it is more expensive than people expect, and it is not guaranteed. We will be honest about the odds on your specific machine instead of taking money to go looking.

It also means the right time to set up a backup is while the machine is healthy, not the morning it stops turning on. If you take nothing else from this page, take that. Two practical notes as well: if your disk is encrypted we may need your login password to test the machine properly after the repair, and a Mac locked to an Apple account cannot be unlocked by us or by any repair shop, so if you bought it used and cannot sign in, bring whatever paperwork you have.

Loud fans and a hot case are usually cheap to fix

A Mac that roars while you are doing light work is normally full of dust with dried-out thermal compound between the chip and the heatsink. Cleaning it properly and renewing that compound quiets it down and brings temperatures back to normal.

Most people walk in braced for a logic board conversation on this one and walk out with a much smaller number, which is a good afternoon for everybody.

Charge ports and port boards belong in the same category. If your charger only works when the cable is held at a particular angle, that is a replaceable part rather than a reason to price out a new laptop.

Which parts, and what we recommend

On most modern MacBook Pros the battery is bonded into a top case that also holds the keyboard and trackpad. So the decision is usually battery alone versus the entire assembly. The assembly costs more and solves more, and on a machine whose keyboard is also worn it is often the smarter spend. We will tell you which category yours falls into instead of defaulting to the bigger number.

Displays are the other real choice. A genuine-grade assembly is expensive, while replacement panels and refurbished assemblies cost considerably less. What you trade is color accuracy, brightness, and how cleanly the assembly seals to the chassis. Newer machine, we lean toward the better part. Older machine, we will say plainly when the cheaper route makes more sense.

The repairs we talk people out of

On older Intel MacBook Pros there is a line past which a logic board repair costs more than the machine is worth, especially given how far ahead current machines are on the same kind of work. When yours is on the wrong side of that line we say so, plainly, and we lose the ticket on purpose.

And the pre-owned inventory is tested and warrantied, which is where a good number of these conversations end up, usually cheaper than anyone expected.

For newer machines the math runs the other way and it is not close. A battery, a screen, or a keyboard on a current MacBook Pro costs a small fraction of replacing the machine, and those are worth doing every time.
