What is probably wrong, and what we can do about it

• No picture on the TV. Almost always the HDMI port. The connector is soldered flat to the board and it does not tolerate sideways force, which cabinets, walls, vacuums, and tripped-over cords supply constantly. It usually starts as a picture that flickers or only works at one cable angle, then goes black for good. Try another cable and another input first, because that is free.
• Nothing happens when you press the button. The Series X keeps its power supply inside the case, so a failed supply makes the whole machine look dead. It is one of the better outcomes despite how alarming it feels.
• Discs that grind, stick, or get spat back out. Mechanism, laser, or an obstruction, and the diagnostic tells us which without guessing.
• Loud, hot, or shutting off mid-game. Dust packed into the intake and fins. Very fixable and usually cheaper than people expect.
• Something got spilled in it. Unplug it, do not power it on to check, and bring it straight here.

Board-level work needs bench time, so plan on leaving it rather than waiting. We give you a realistic window when you drop it off and we would rather overestimate and call you early than the reverse.

We also flag the awkward possibility before taking your money: a hard enough hit can damage the chip that drives video as well as the connector, and if that is the case a port alone will not fix it. We test for that up front. It is also why a suspiciously cheap quote elsewhere should worry you rather than attract you, because a pad torn during removal turns a manageable repair into a much bigger one.

Nothing on your console gets erased

Your saves, your installed games, and your captures stay with the console through port work, power supplies, drives, and cleanings. We never wipe a machine, and we do not need you to sign into anything.

One thing worth raising at the counter: opening the console affects manufacturer coverage. If yours is recent enough to still be covered, say so and we will tell you honestly whether going back to the manufacturer beats paying us. Losing a job to give someone the right answer is a trade we make regularly.

You can also watch us work, because the bench sits out in the open in the same room as the counter. There are no curtains around our repair tables.

Why it got loud, and which clean it actually needs

Air comes in the bottom of a Series X and goes out the top. That design is excellent right up until the intake and the heatsink fins pack solid with household dust, which takes about four or five years in a carpeted room and rather less with a pet in the house.

The console tells you in stages. First it gets loud. Then it runs hot to the touch. Then it starts shutting down in the middle of a session because the chip is protecting itself.

Loud but stable means a thorough clean of the fan, intake, and fins, and that is all you need. Shutting off under load means that plus renewing the material between the chip and the heatsink. We tell you which category yours is in rather than defaulting to the bigger number, because the free diagnostic is how we find out and there is no reason to guess.

If something got spilled in it, unplug it and resist the urge to power it up and see. Energizing a wet board is the single most damaging thing you can do.

Do not buy a used disc drive

It is the most common way people waste money on this console. Current-generation hardware ties the disc drive to the specific machine it shipped in, so a drive bought online will bolt on and still not work. We would rather you know that now than after you have paid for one.

While you are here, controllers are worth mentioning. Stick drift is the complaint we hear most and it is a small repair, not a reason to buy new ones.

Fix it or trade it?

Repair usually wins on a Series X. These consoles hold value, the common repairs run well under replacement cost, and you keep your installed library, your saves, and your controllers, which are not cheap to replace on their own.

It stops winning when a console has several serious problems at once, or when liquid got deep enough to corrode multiple areas of the board. We say that plainly rather than quoting a repair we do not believe in. In that case we make you an offer on the console as it is and show you what is on the shelf in pre-owned inventory, because buying, selling, and trading is part of what we do here.
