Do not buy a replacement disc drive online

This is the fastest way to waste money on a Slim, so it goes first. Yes, the disc drive detaches. No, that does not make drives interchangeable.

Before a drive will read anything it has to be paired to your console, and that pairing runs over an internet connection. A drive can be bolted on perfectly, look entirely correct, and still do nothing at all. A used one off a marketplace is not a guaranteed fix, and swapping drives between two consoles in the same house does not work the way you would expect.

It also means a console that stopped reading discs does not necessarily have a broken drive. It might be a pairing issue, it might be the connector between the drive and the console, and it might genuinely be the mechanism or the laser. That is exactly what the free basic diagnostic is for. We would rather spend 10 minutes proving it is a connector than sell somebody a part they never needed.

No signal on the TV? That is the repair we do most

Different case, same weak point: the HDMI port. The connector is soldered flat to the mainboard, the console usually stands upright, and the cable exits at the back into whatever space the cabinet leaves. Push the console back, vacuum around it, or trip over the cord, and that rigid connector takes a sideways force it cannot handle.

It fails in stages, so you may have had warnings. Flickering or dropouts mid-session first. Then a picture that only appears when the cable sits at exactly one angle. Then nothing, with the console clearly powered and the TV insisting there is no signal.

Two free things to try before you come in: another HDMI cable and another input on the TV. If it is still black after that, the port needs replacing at the board, which is something we do regularly and something that does not mean buying a new console.

The price, the timeline, and the warning we give up front

The honest caveat, before your money is involved: a hard enough impact can damage the chip that drives video as well as the port, in which case replacing the connector alone will not fix it. We test for that first. It is also why a cut-rate quote elsewhere should make you nervous rather than happy, because a pad torn during removal turns a manageable repair into a big one.

Nothing on your console gets erased

Saves, installed games, and captures all live on storage that is physically part of the mainboard, so every repair that saves the board saves your data. We never wipe consoles.

A board that truly cannot be saved takes the data with it, which is the argument for turning on cloud saves today rather than after something goes wrong.

Worth mentioning at the counter: opening the console past the removable panels affects manufacturer coverage. If yours is recent enough to still be covered, say so and we will tell you honestly whether going back to the manufacturer beats paying us. We lose jobs that way on purpose.

Why it got loud, and which service it needs

Compressing the same hardware into a smaller shell costs airflow margin. Dust collects in the intake and heatsink on every console, but the Slim has less headroom before it starts to bite.

You get warnings in order. The fan gets loud. The exhaust runs hot. Then the console begins shutting itself off mid-game, which is the chip protecting itself rather than the console dying.

Loud but stable means a thorough clean of fan, intake, and fins. Shutting down under load means that plus renewing the material between the chip and the heatsink. We tell you which category yours is in, because the free diagnostic is how we find out and there is no reason to sell you the bigger job.

Spills round out the list. A drink on a shelf above a standing console goes straight in through the vents. Unplug it and resist the temptation to power it up and check, because energizing a wet board is the difference between a console we can save and one we cannot.

Worth fixing, or time to trade?

Fix it, in almost every case. A working Slim holds its value, the repairs on this page cost well under a replacement, and you keep your library, your saves, and your controllers, none of which are cheap to buy again.

The exception is a console carrying multiple serious faults, or one that took enough liquid to corrode several areas of the board. When we hit that we say so rather than quoting work we do not believe in, and we will still make you an offer on the console as it is. There is tested stock in pre-owned inventory as well, since buying, selling, and trading is part of what happens here rather than an afterthought.

That is exactly why we do not charge to look. The honest answer should stay free, including the times it costs us the job.
